M.2 SSDs are known for their high bandwidth and large capacity. NVMe SSDs, on the other hand, are more compact than SATA SSDs.
The other major difference between the two is in the form factor. SATA is typically found in desktop and notebook computers while NVMe is mostly used in the netbooks and workstations. The newer M.2 form factor ssdds have a full 32-bit interface, whereas the older m.2 ssd form factors have a full 32-bit interface but no NVMe component. Since the SSDs have a full 32-bit interface but no NVMe components, the performance of NVMe based SSDs is equal to that of the SATA SSDs.
A few disadvantages of using an ahci as nvme SSD is the latency that they entail. With the old Windows Operating System, an ahci SSD will not work unless you upgrade to Windows Vista or Windows 7. But with the newer Windows Operating Systems, the SSD can easily be compatible with all these operating systems.
When we compare the two types of solid-state drives, one of the most important aspects to consider is the drive’s power consumption. Both of the drives use non-volatile memory formats and both of them consume a lot of power. Therefore, if you are looking for a good deal, you might want to consider one of the two.
But more than this, you should also consider several other factors such as pricing, reliability, durability and performance among others. It would be a fair to say that the price of an ahci SSD is more than that of a NVMe SSD. The reason behind this is that the latter uses faster flash technology and hence consumes less power. Another aspect to consider is the performance of the two desktop drives. You can get the best performance from an ahci SSD but it will cost you more than that of a NVMe desktop.
